- Statistics is the scientific subject of making effective use of numerical data relating to groups of individuals or experiments.
It deals with all aspects of this, including not only the collection, analysis and interpretation of such data, but also the planning of the collection of data, in terms of the design of surveys and experiments.
Originally associated with government data (e.g., census data), the statistical science now has applications in all the academic fields such as social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, medical sciences, etc.
Statistics provides ways to design efficient experiments that eliminate time-consuming trial and error.
Our department aims to train statisticians who is particularly versed in the ways of thinking necessary for the successful application of statistical analysis.
Students will gain this experience by treating various types of real data from a number of fields.
